Experimental Testing of Slender Load-Bearing Masonry Walls with Realistic Support Conditions

نویسندگان

چکیده

Slender, load-bearing masonry walls with slenderness ratios (h/t) greater than 30 are required to be designed as pinned-pinned elements per North American provisions for masonry, CSA S304-14 (2019) and TMS 402-16 (2016). This provision neglects the contribution of reactive stiffness foundation strength wall its effect on redistribution bending moments along height. Eight full-scale built different degrees base tested under an eccentric axial load. Results from tests showed increased capacity decreased deflections rotational stiffness. Experimental data was used determine key design parameters including effective flexural rigidity moment distribution height walls. Comparing values determined experimental results code provisions, it found both codes tend underestimate

Bearing Testing Machine with Rotating Load Vector

A concept of new test stand for investigating fatigue strength of plain bearing surface layer has been presented in the paper. The machine with rotating load vector was designed, built and experimentally verified in tribological laboratory of the Technical University of Gdańsk. The machine of such a principle of slide bearing surface layer load generation is, according to ISO 7905 standard, a b...

Homogenization of Interlocking Masonry Walls

In a previous publication the authors proposed a continuous model for describing the mechanical behaviour of ‘Running Bond’ masonry walls. Here a different masonry structure is considered. This structure is ‘bi-atomic’ in the sense that its pattern consists in two kind of blocks with different. The homogenization by differential expansions technique is used for obtaining an equivalent Cosserat ...

Retrofitting Masonry Walls with Carbon Mesh

Static-cyclic shear load tests and tensile tests on retrofitted masonry walls were conducted at UAS Fribourg for an evaluation of the newly developed retrofitting system, the S&P ARMO-System. This retrofitting system consists of a composite of carbon mesh embedded in a specially adapted high quality spray mortar. It can be applied with established construction techniques using traditional const...

Multi-scale analysis of masonry walls

Masonry is a heterogeneous structural material which exhibits a complex behaviour with potential cracking in each of its phases. Its structure (geometrical arrangement of mortar joints, quasi-brittle constituents) causes the appearance of complex composite failure modes with loading path dependence and strong damage-induced anisotropy effects. Large scale computations for masonry structures req...

Polarimetric radar signature of masonry walls

A ground-penetrating radar with polarimetric capability has been used for investigating masonry walls. The obtained results show that hollow spaces inside masonry give a well-detectable polarimetric signature that can be usefully used for detecting internal cavities in walls, and for characterizing the masonry. r 2007 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
